What's going on?
You may be starting out the long and arduous process of applications. Many jobs receive hundreds of applications for the available positions, so it is essential that you are able to make your application stand out from the crowd. It is not enough to have the right skills and background, but you must be able to present these facts in the right way in your cover letter. Follow these simple instructions to make sure your cover letter is remembered by recruiters:
1. Relate your skills to the job
This might seem like an obvious tip, but when you get into the routine of job-hunting, it can become all too tempting to copy and paste the same generic cover letter into every job application. While it is fine, and sensible, to have a core structure and content for your cover letters, it is important to tailor each one to the specific position you are applying for. Think about what skills you have that make you well-suited for that particular role. To really make your cover letter stand out, use exact phrases from the description of the job in your cover letter to show how perfect you would be at the company.
2. Don't be too formal
While it is important to remain professional, at the end of the day, recruiters are looking for people that will be a positive addition to the company, and that includes someone who will get on with the rest of the team. Try and be friendly in your tone, as this will also stand out from the overly-formal and boring cover letters that recruiters will be inundated with.
3. Don't waffle
It can be tempting to list out every thing and achievement you've ever done, but fight this urge. Recruiters will be bored before they get to the end of your letter, and you won't be memorable. Being able to write clearly and succinctly is an important skill in business, so make sure you bring this skill out when writing your cover letter.
